Adults aged 75 and over are recommended to have a COVID-19 booster every six months in Australia, as the virus continues to cause serious illness and deaths.

COVID-19 is estimated to cause between 2,000 and 5,000 deaths and more than 100,000 hospital admissions in Australia each year. It was the country’s leading infectious cause of death from 2020 to 2025, with 4,613 deaths recorded in 2023, 3,908 in 2024 and 1,722 in 2025.

Widespread immunity from vaccination and past infection has made COVID-19 less risky than it was five years ago. Older people, pregnant women and people with chronic conditions such as asthma or heart disease can still face severe outcomes. Vaccination remains a way to reduce the risk of death and serious complications.
