Northern Ireland households may be £2,900 worse off than they would have been with normal inflation over the past five years, the Resolution Foundation estimates.

The think tank says the UK experienced the equivalent of 13 years of typical inflation in that period. It links the price surge to the pandemic and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The foundation identifies rising energy costs as a main driver of the squeeze. It found that 1.7 million more households said they could not keep their homes warm enough in 2022/23 than in the previous year.

Among poorer households, the share falling behind on priority bills has almost doubled since 2020, reaching 18% in March, the study found.
