Kenya has recorded its first Ebola case and death, Health Minister Aden Duale said on Tuesday. The patient was a Kenyan man who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years.
After falling ill about a month ago, he received treatment in the DRC. He travelled through Kampala and flew to Nairobi on 3 October. A relative and a friend took him from the airport to hospital, where he was isolated and tested positive before his death. Duale said officials had identified 28 contacts, including relatives and healthcare workers; no other positive test had been reported. Authorities were also seeking 23 passengers and four crew members from his flight.
The DRC outbreak began in May in Ituri province and has reached seven provinces in the country’s north and east. As of 2 October, the country had recorded 8,463 confirmed cases and 4,082 deaths. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment.
