Tennessee will carry out no executions for the rest of the year at minimum, Governor Bill Lee said, after officials stopped an attempt to execute Christa Pike on Wednesday night. He has ordered an independent inquiry.
Witnesses in Nashville said Pike remained awake and was snoring loudly roughly 40 minutes after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. The Tennessee Department of Correction said she was moved to a medical facility elsewhere. Her condition was not known on Thursday.
Pike, 50, received a death sentence for the 1994 murder of a teenage classmate. Lee has called for an outside review of the execution attempt. In May, officials abandoned another lethal injection after spending more than an hour trying to establish an intravenous line for Tony Carruthers.
