US inflation reached 3.7% in the year to September, up from 3.4% in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. That was the highest annual rate since May, when it reached 4.2%.
Gasoline prices rose 34% from a year earlier and accounted for more than half of the overall increase. Fuel oil rose 74%, while air fares climbed 22.4%.
Consumer prices increased 0.6% from August to September. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% over the month and stood at 2.6% annually.
The figures are the final inflation report before the US midterm elections. Polls show widespread dissatisfaction with the cost of living under the Trump administration as Republicans head into the vote.
