Active membership in the Friendswood Senior Citizen Program grew 35% between 2024 and 2026, straining the space available at its activity building.
Annual reports flag crowded rooms and hallways as safety risks, particularly for participants who use walkers or other mobility aids. The building was constructed as a municipal library in 1972 and now accommodates activities such as yoga, chair volleyball and Mahjong. The program is a daytime activity center, not a residential facility.
Staff and the nine-member Senior Citizens Advisory Committee have proposed a larger, updated facility to the Friendswood City Council. A replacement could run into the tens of millions of dollars, Deputy City Manager Steven Rhea said.
The council may consider a May 2027 bond election. If council members put the measure on the ballot, Friendswood voters would decide whether to approve taxpayer funding for a new building.
