Hal Steinbrenner put the Yankees’ playoff failure on the players while standing by manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman. The team owner said Boone had managed well, particularly in handling the pitching staff.
New York finished 93-68, behind Tampa Bay in the AL East. The Yankees beat Boston 2-0 in their Wild Card Series, then lost their Division Series to the Rays 3-0.
The result extends the Yankees’ wait for a World Series title to 17 seasons. That equals their longest championship gap since their first title in 1923: the stretch between their 1978 and 1996 wins.
Steinbrenner spoke Wednesday in a video news conference alongside Cashman. Boone, who later spoke from Yankee Stadium, has one season remaining on the contract extension he agreed to in February 2025.
