Slow progress on Aurora Avenue improvements appears to be straining relations between state lawmakers and the Seattle Department of Transportation. Representative Julia Reed and acting SDOT director Angela Brady exchanged emails this month amid the dispute over plans for the road.
Lawmakers set aside $50 million more than four years ago for improvements to Aurora, which is also State Route 99 through Seattle. In 2022, they directed a demonstration project between North 90th and North 105th streets. SDOT instead began planning a safety project spanning South Lake Union to North 145th Street.
In Fremont, the Aurora Reimagined Coalition is pushing for marked crossings and bus stops through its Reconnect Fremont project. Families living east of Aurora currently use a North 41st Street overpass to reach B.F. Day Elementary School; that route presents difficulties for households traveling by bike.
