Seattle has not changed its street-parking rate policy, the Seattle Department of Transportation said after a city video raised concerns about possible surge pricing.
The video described how parking rates respond to demand for spaces. Some viewers took the explanation to mean prices could rise in real time, and drivers voiced frustration about the cost and difficulty of finding parking.
SDOT said its rate-setting system has been in place since 2010. Rather than changing prices in real time, the department adjusts street-parking rates two or three times a year. It said the video was made to accompany a webpage with more context, but circulated on social media without that explanation.
