Jeffrey Archer, the novelist and former Conservative MP, has died aged 86. His publisher, HarperCollins, said he died at home on Monday, between writing sessions.
Archer served five years as an MP and later became the Conservative Party’s deputy chair. Made a life peer in 1992, he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice after a court found he had lied during a 1987 libel case. His political career collapsed during a 1999 bid to become London mayor. He was imprisoned, released early in 2003 and retired from the House of Lords in 2024.
His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, appeared in 1976. His books sold 300 million copies across 119 countries, and his latest novel, Adam and Eve, was due for publication on Tuesday 6 October. HarperCollins said he had met hundreds of readers at a London event on Sunday.
