Spain’s parliament has rejected emergency housing measures proposed by Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist-led coalition amid growing protests over housing costs.
The conservative People’s party, far-right Vox and Catalan pro-independence party Junts voted against decrees that included a ban on evictions until 2030 and rules for temporary lettings and lettings by room. The People’s party said building more homes, rather than regulating housing, was its preferred response to the crisis.
Protesters outside parliament in Madrid booed the result. Anger had intensified after Maricarmen Abascal, 87, was evicted from the home where she had lived for 70 years. Abascal, who uses a wheelchair, said she could not afford a 230% rent increase demanded by the investment fund that bought her flat.
