South West Water has announced a hosepipe ban for several areas of Devon, starting at noon on Tuesday 14 July. The restrictions follow weeks of hot weather and rising demand for drinking water.
The affected areas include Tiverton, Cullompton, Bampton, Honiton, South Molton, Dunkeswell, Axminster and Lyme Regis. Residents are being urged not to use hosepipes to water gardens, fill pools or clean cars, patios and boats.
The company says demand has risen by about 5.4 million litres a day in Mid Devon and parts of East Devon, despite local treatment facilities operating around the clock for three weeks. It has brought in tankers, redirected water from less affected areas and doubled its leak detection and repair teams.
David Harris, the company's managing director for water services, said restrictions would be lifted once demand returned to normal for the time of year and the water supply network had recovered.
