Katie Zacharia is leaving her post as White House press secretary after a brief tenure marked by criticism of her first briefing, held on Tuesday.
The briefing lasted less than 15 minutes and included just three questions from reporters. Zacharia, 42, then faced questions about her credentials and preparedness, including where she had passed the bar exam after President Donald Trump and others described her as an attorney.
On Friday, Trump told reporters he had urged Zacharia to reconsider the job and said he believed the media had treated her badly. Hours later, she praised him on X and said it had been an honour to work for him.
Hakeem Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, used her departure to criticise the Republican White House ahead of November's midterm elections, which will decide control of Congress.
