Katie Zacharia is leaving her post as White House press secretary after about five days in the job. Her departure comes after a first briefing on Tuesday that drew heavy criticism.
The briefing lasted less than 15 minutes, and Zacharia took three questions from reporters. In the following days, the 42-year-old faced questions about her qualifications and readiness for the role.
President Donald Trump signaled on Friday that she might leave, telling reporters he had urged her to reconsider whether she wanted the job. Hours later, Zacharia praised Trump on X and said it had been an honor to work for him.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries used the departure to criticize the Republican White House. His response comes ahead of November's midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress.
