Spain will hold an early general election on 29 November, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has confirmed, after his minority government failed to pass housing reforms.
Parliament rejected a series of measures aimed at tackling the housing crisis on Friday. Sánchez’s Socialist party now faces a difficult re-election campaign: polls put it behind the conservative People’s Party, which many expect to seek a governing deal with the far-right Vox.
Announcing the vote, Sánchez warned of a rise in the far right in other countries and argued that Spain should continue to stand for peace, feminism and prosperity.
