US immigration agents searched Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home in the Washington DC area as part of a federal criminal investigation, a Justice Department spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said Homeland Security Investigations agents had a judicially authorised warrant but gave no details of the investigation. It is unclear whether Omar was at the property; Congress is currently out of session.

Omar, a Democrat and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, described the search as an attempt to target political enemies and said she would not be silenced. Her communications director, Jacklyn Rogers, said the congresswoman had done nothing wrong.

Trump told reporters on Monday that he had nothing to do with the Justice Department investigation. He later criticised Omar while discussing the search at a rally in Ohio.
