The Chicago White Sox’s postseason ended Saturday night with a 2-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the American League Division Series.
Cleveland won the best-of-five series after trailing 0-2. José Ramírez hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning after Steven Kwan led off with a single. Guardians pitchers struck out 21 White Sox batters, including 12 by Gavin Williams, setting a record for a nine-inning postseason game. Chicago managed three hits.
The playoff appearance capped an unexpected run for a White Sox team that had endured three consecutive 100-loss seasons. It energized fans on Chicago’s South Side, though the club’s wait for another World Series title continues; its last came in 2005.
The Guardians are due to open the American League Championship Series at Tampa Bay on Monday night.
