South Dallas’s Forest Theater is scheduled to reopen November 1 with a community celebration ending in the relighting of its tower and marquee. The lights are expected to return for the first time in more than 50 years.
The event, called the Grand Return, is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. It is expected to feature live music and entertainment, local vendors, food trucks and a chance to see the restored theater before the lighting ceremony.
Forest Forward, the nonprofit leading the project, is restoring the venue as part of a redevelopment plan valued at more than $45 million. Plans for the expanded campus include a concert hall for 1,000 people, a 200-seat black box theater and a creative education lab.
The theater opened in 1949 and closed in 2008. Its performers over the years included Prince, B.B. King and Dallas-born Erykah Badu.
