The Perot Museum of Nature and Science has announced a $185 million expansion on about four acres beside its Dallas building, replacing an area now used for surface parking.
The plans call for roughly 25 large outdoor exhibits and 40 smaller exhibits and interactive experiences. Museum CEO Linda Silver said the space could accommodate demonstrations that the building’s low ceilings make difficult, including a 30-foot fire tornado and lightning produced with a Tesla coil and Faraday cage.
Pollinator and paleontology gardens are planned alongside a five-story parking garage, an arrival pavilion and a separate school bus drop-off area. The project would double the museum’s exhibit space by adding space outdoors.
Silver said construction is expected to start in January, with the new space slated to open in late 2028. Private contributions have raised $135 million so far, leaving $50 million toward a goal that also includes an endowment.
