South West Water has announced a hosepipe ban for several areas of Devon, starting at noon on Tuesday, 14 July.
The company has urged residents in affected areas to avoid using hosepipes to water gardens, fill pools or clean cars, patios and boats. The areas listed include Tiverton, Cullompton, Bampton, Honiton, South Molton, Dunkeswell, Axminster and Lyme Regis. Thousands of homes are expected to be affected.
South West Water said hot weather has driven up demand on its drinking water network in Mid Devon and parts of East Devon by about 5.4 million litres a day. It said local treatment facilities have been operating around the clock for three weeks.
The company has brought in tankers, increased leak detection and repair crews, and redirected water from less affected neighbouring areas. It said it would lift the restrictions once demand returns to normal and the local supply network has recovered.
