Dallas officials said AI cameras on 50 sanitation trucks have flagged more than 5,300 snapshots for review. At a City Council subcommittee briefing Monday, they reported 347 field inspections and 101 citations under the program.
The cameras take still photos from the backs of trucks, rather than recording continuous video. The system flags possible code violations, including illegal dumping, graffiti and structural problems; code employees verify potential issues before taking action. Officials said the trucks travel citywide and the program is not designed to target particular neighborhoods.
Staff said they are working to soften courtesy notices and improve outreach amid concerns about repair costs for low-income homeowners. They said they cannot connect homeowners with financial assistance from the city.
Officials also discussed privacy safeguards, including blurring faces and protecting data. Code compliance director Chris Christian said records are kept for 12 months, as required by law.
