President Donald Trump said Sunday that his administration has a plan to rebuild East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., as a championship-level course. He said work would start Nov. 15 and take about 15 months.
Trump said the Interior Department worked with golf course architect Tom Fazio on the plan. He said the finished course would be open to the public and designed to host major tournaments. A preservation group and two D.C. residents have challenged the proposed renovation in court.
After the announcement, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes asked the administration whether it still intends to argue that the project is preliminary and that no final agency action has occurred. Justice Department lawyers had described the championship-course plans as hypothetical, while National Park Service officials said last week they knew of no formal plan beyond earlier social media posts by Trump and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
Last week, Reyes ordered the administration not to cut down more trees at the course through Oct. 26. The administration had already removed hundreds of trees.
