Alberta voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to begin the process of leaving Canada, unofficial results from Elections Alberta indicate.
With nearly 1.9 million votes counted, about 76% favoured remaining in Canada, while 24% backed starting the separation process. The result is a win for Prime Minister Mark Carney and supporters of Canadian unity, though the count was not final.
Carney, who grew up in Edmonton, welcomed the result and said it would help Canadians pursue trade diversification, major infrastructure projects and energy development. Keith Wilson, a separatist leader, said the figures could still change but argued that support for separation showed substantial dissatisfaction with Alberta’s treatment.
