Sir Keir Starmer has faced what was described as his final Prime Minister’s Questions, with Andy Burnham expected to succeed him next week.
Starmer met senior ministers at Downing Street before the Commons session. He pledged his backing to Burnham as nominations for the Labour leadership were set to close on Wednesday.
In the Commons, Starmer paid tribute to Ann Widdecombe, described as a murdered politician, and called for stronger protection of democracy. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch questioned him about the handover. He ended the session by saying his political journey was over.
Starmer also wished England luck ahead of their World Cup semi-final against Argentina. He told MPs he had a television appointment at 8pm, without specifying what he planned to watch.
