Transport Action Network Cymru has challenged Welsh Labour’s renewed backing for an M4 relief road near Newport. The group says the financial and environmental objections that contributed to the previous plan’s cancellation in 2019 remain.
In a motion due for debate in the Senedd on Wednesday, 21 October, Labour asks the Welsh Government to begin developing a new road. It also wants to keep M4 junctions 25, 26 and 27 open. Welsh Labour leader Ken Skates supports a revised version of the earlier proposal for a route south of Newport.
The campaign group wants public transport measures considered before another road scheme. Campaigner Gwynfor Edwards pointed to the South East Wales Transport Commission’s proposals, including new rail stations to improve connections between Cardiff and Newport. He said increasing road capacity could bring more traffic.
TAN Cymru agrees with Labour’s opposition to junction closures, while maintaining that improvements to public transport should take priority in addressing congestion around Newport.
