Sound Transit leaders and state and local officials are expected to update the community Monday on the delayed Ballard light rail extension.

The agency projects a 2042 opening for the Link segment from Seattle Center to Market Street, 12 years after the 2030 date promised when voters approved the ST3 measure in 2016. Sound Transit says it is allocating $18.1 billion to the Ballard corridor. It attributes the revised schedule to changes in station locations, a longer construction timetable and an extended environmental review.

The 2042 projection depends on finding about $1 billion in additional savings by 2030 to start buying property between Seattle Center and Market Street, approving a final design by 2032 and securing full funding by 2033. Sound Transit says the Market Street extension could slip to around 2060 if those savings are not found.
