President Trump announced an $8 billion program to help U.S. farmers cover diesel expenses during the harvest season. The Agriculture Department will administer the Harvest Fuel Relief Program, which Trump announced at a Kansas campaign rally and on social media.
Farmers will receive one-time payments through the department’s Farm Service Agency. The aid is intended to offset fuel bills, not reduce the price of diesel at the pump. Trump credited Kansas Republican Sen. Roger Marshall with helping move the initiative forward.
Diesel prices were near a national average of $6.32 a gallon on Tuesday, after reaching a record high in September. Earlier this month, the administration also moved to allow red-dyed diesel, a tax-exempt fuel generally used in farm equipment, in standard highway vehicles.
