The latest National Fraud Initiative exercise in Wales identified £8.7 million in fraud, overpayments and errors through electronic data matching. That is £1.6 million more than in the previous round and the highest total in five cycles.
The initiative helps public bodies detect problems that could lead to financial losses. Since it began in 1996, it has reported £65.2 million in outcomes for Wales.
Catherine Mealing-Jones, Auditor General for Wales, said detecting fraud, overpayments and errors helps protect public money and confidence in public services. The £8.7 million figure covers identified cases; no separate recovery total was given.
