Houston police appear to have made more searches than any other law enforcement agency on UNC Charlotte’s Flock camera network from March through May, university data shows.
The data records 183,252 Houston Police Department searches of the 17-camera network, more than 1,000 miles from Houston. That is about five times the number of searches attributed to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
UNC Charlotte says participating agencies can search for a license plate and learn whether one of its cameras detected it, along with the location, date and time. The result does not identify the person associated with the vehicle or provide its registration. Houston police say a Flock plate search checks images from cameras shared with the department for a potential match.
