California K-12 test scores edged up in nearly every category last year, but gains slowed after a post-pandemic surge, according to state data released this week.
Math proficiency reached 38.5%, up just over one percentage point. English language arts proficiency rose half a point to 49.3%, while science proficiency climbed 3.3 percentage points to 36%. State Board of Education President Linda Darling-Hammond described the gains as steady but said schools still had work to do.
Not every group has returned to pre-pandemic levels: scores for some students, including white and Asian students, remained below their 2019 levels. Statewide enrollment also fell by 74,000 from the previous year to 5.7 million, continuing a decade-long decline.
The state released enrollment, test scores and California School Dashboard data together for the first time, giving districts and policymakers a broader view of the changes.
