New York University is committing $6 million over four years to the upkeep and improvement of Washington Square Park, doubling its financial support for the public space.
The pledge follows closer work between NYU and the Washington Square Park Conservancy on maintenance, safety and quality-of-life initiatives, and community events. Arlene Peralta, NYU’s assistant vice president of community engagement and a Conservancy board member, said the university will continue working with the Conservancy and the Parks Department on the funding.
NYU has contributed to park maintenance, operations and renovations for more than two decades. With many university buildings around it, the park has long served as an unofficial campus quad, though it remains a gathering place for New Yorkers and visitors.
