Hamilton High School freshman Shaurya Arora is heading to Washington, D.C., after winning Arizona's state civics bee.
The Chandler student will compete in the National Civics Bee Championship on Oct. 14. Organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition brings together students from all 50 states. The nationally televised event offers a chance to win $100,000 toward an education savings plan.
Competitors must demonstrate their knowledge of civics and propose a solution to a problem in their communities. Arora has chosen affordable housing, an issue he said he has seen affect people in his neighborhood. Hilary Crow, a foundation vice president, said the bee aims to help students understand government and take part in local problem-solving.
