Four free screenings of Once Upon a Time in Harlem are scheduled across Manhattan on October 24 and 25 through a partnership between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and distributor NEON. Tickets are available to reserve on a first-come, first-served basis.
The documentary draws on footage that filmmaker William Greaves and his son David shot at a 1972 gathering in Duke Ellington’s townhouse. Artists and writers including Aaron Douglas, Romare Bearden and James Van Der Zee discussed the Harlem Renaissance. William Greaves died in 2014 before completing the film; David later worked on it with his daughter, Liani Greaves.
Saturday’s screenings are at 1 p.m. at AMC Magic Johnson Harlem and 4:45 p.m. at Film Forum. On Sunday, the film returns to AMC Magic Johnson Harlem at 1 p.m., followed by a 3:45 p.m. showing at Howard Gilman Theater.
