New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed legislation that will quadruple state income tax credits for eligible volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.
Under the new law, an individual's annual credit increases to $800, up from $200. For married couples, it rises to $1,600, compared with $400 now. The higher credits apply to the 2027 tax year, so eligible taxpayers can claim them when they file in 2028.
Volunteers may choose the state income tax credit or a qualifying local property tax exemption. Hochul said the change is intended to ease costs for people who give their time to emergency services. New York also allows local governments to offer eligible volunteers property tax exemptions of up to 10%.
