Nine horse-drawn carriage workers rallied at a Central Park entrance on Friday, calling for New York City to reconsider a proposed ban on their industry.
The workers accused Mayor Zohran Mamdani of hypocrisy over a deal they say threatens their livelihoods. They urged Mamdani, City Council Speaker Julie Menin and other officials to resume talks with their union, TWU Local 10.
The bill, known as Romanch’s Law, would prohibit horse-drawn carriage operations across the five boroughs beginning in June 2028. Menin has pledged to pass it next week. It would require the city to offer career counseling and job referrals, but would not provide compensation for workers who have invested in their businesses, according to the union.
