Five recently installed elevators at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium subway station have faced months of outages, transit authority data shows. One is expected to stay out of service until winter 2027 because of power problems.
The elevators began returning to service in April after a replacement project that started in November 2024. By August, the latest month with public figures, they were available 56% of the time, down from 99% in April and well below the 95% systemwide average. MTA figures show 37 outages at the station from April through August, 31 of them unscheduled.
The Bronx station serves the B, D and 4 lines and handled more than 6.1 million riders last year. John Ortiz, 64, who uses a walker and travels through the station daily, described continuing problems with the lifts.
