Weekend lane closures on Highway 101 at San Francisco’s Hospital Curve caused major delays and sent drivers onto other routes.
All southbound lanes and one northbound lane were closed between 17th Street and Cesar Chavez Street for repaving as part of a broader rehabilitation project. Caltrans reported a 21% rise in traffic volume on the San Mateo Bridge and a 28% drop on the Bay Bridge as motorists took alternate routes. The highway was expected to reopen early Monday.
Caltrans spokesperson Pedro Quintana said crews were working around the clock to remove old pavement and prepare the roadway. Another closure is planned for the weekend of Oct. 23, when all westbound Interstate 80 lanes from Fifth Street to 15th Street in San Francisco are set to close for a bridge-deck overlay. Caltrans is monitoring the weather and advises drivers to use another route or public transit.
