Culture critic Peter Hartlaub says cycling has become his usual way of reaching assignments in San Francisco. He now combines his bike with public transit, a routine that began with an unsettling ride up Market Street in 2016.
On that first ride, a colleague warned him about streetcar rails, car doors and other cyclists. Hartlaub had ridden bikes earlier in life, but after moving back to San Francisco in 1999, he left his bicycle unused for years.
A decade after taking up city cycling, Hartlaub says he is healthier, spends less money and saves time by passing traffic jams. He also believes the change has made him a better journalist and community member.
