The Golden State Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream 68-64 on Saturday in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, holding Atlanta scoreless over the final 3:12.
Golden State trailed 56-51 entering the fourth quarter after scoring just nine points in the third. It then outscored the Dream 17-8 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Atlanta had won 10 straight games before the Finals.
The comeback came despite a difficult shooting night for coach Natalie Nakase’s team. The Valkyries made 32% of their 78 shots, including 7 of 33 from three-point range. Angel Reese had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Atlanta, while Veronica Burton scored five for Golden State.
Defense has been central to the Valkyries’ season, and their late stand secured the franchise’s first Finals game victory.
