Sir Keir Starmer has received France’s Légion d’honneur, the country’s highest honour, from President Emmanuel Macron.
The presentation followed a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a group Starmer and Macron helped establish to support Ukraine after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Macron praised Starmer’s decency and his work on Ukraine and European security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also thanked Starmer at the event in the French presidential palace. Starmer is due to leave office next week.
He is not the first serving British prime minister to receive the award: David Lloyd George was honoured in 1920. Winston Churchill later received its highest rank, the Grand Cross.
