Keir Starmer is reportedly considering a trip to the World Cup final in New Jersey if England beat Argentina in Wednesday’s semi-final. It would be one of his last acts as prime minister.

Under the reported plan, Starmer would watch Sunday’s match at MetLife Stadium before flying back to London, arriving at about 7.30am for his final morning in office. Details are still being worked out, but a No 10 official said the trip would not delay the transfer of power.

Starmer is then understood to be planning a final speech at Downing Street before going to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to the King. Andy Burnham is due to take over that afternoon, after 27 more nominations from Labour MPs on Monday brought his total to 349.

The government is also considering a bank holiday on Friday 24 July, but only if England win both the semi-final and the tournament.
