Fifa has appointed American referee Ismail Elfath for England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday. Kick-off is at 20:00 BST.
Elfath, 44, has refereed three matches at this tournament: Japan against the Netherlands, Uruguay against Spain, and Norway’s last-16 win over Brazil. He has shown six yellow cards and sent off Uruguay midfielder Agustin Canobbio for a high challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.
The official has also had a role in two trophy wins for Lionel Messi. He was fourth official when Argentina beat France in the 2022 World Cup final and refereed Inter Miami’s 2023 Leagues Cup final win over Nashville SC. Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins will be his assistants on Wednesday, with Maurizio Mariani as fourth official.
