FIFA has appointed Ismail Elfath to referee England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday.
The American official has crossed paths with Lionel Messi before, including in the 2023 Leagues Cup final, when Inter Miami beat Nashville SC on penalties. Elfath was also the fourth official when Argentina defeated France in the 2022 World Cup final.
His appointment comes amid speculation about favouritism towards Argentina after disputed decisions in their wins over Egypt and Switzerland. Egypt had a goal disallowed, while Switzerland’s Breel Embolo was sent off. FIFA strongly denies allegations that it is helping Argentina win the tournament; Elfath has not refereed either semi-finalist at this World Cup.
