The Los Angeles Dodgers’ bid for a third straight World Series title ended Thursday when the Milwaukee Brewers completed a sweep in the National League Championship Series with a 6-4 win in Los Angeles.
Shohei Ohtani’s reduced production was one factor in the Dodgers’ exit. He left a June 11 game in Pittsburgh with what the team called knee inflammation. Lingering knee and bicep injuries subsequently limited him; after that game, he made three more pitching appearances before being shut down as a pitcher on July 3.
The setback extended beyond Ohtani. The Dodgers’ bullpen and starting pitchers showed weaknesses during the summer, while the offense went through long stretches without much production. When the lineup struggled, Ohtani was less able to make up the difference at the plate.
