Christa Pike has left hospital after surviving two lethal injections during an attempted execution on 30 September, her lawyers said. The 50-year-old has returned to the prison where she has spent 30 years and is still receiving medical care.
The pentobarbital injections left Pike in critical condition. She regained consciousness and began speaking earlier this week. Her lawyers said she was grateful to the first responders and medical team who cared for her.
It remains unclear whether Tennessee intends to attempt another execution. At a court hearing on Wednesday, Assistant Attorney General Will Ayers said he did not know the state's plans. The judge ordered Tennessee to preserve evidence connected to the failed injections.
Pike was 18 when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom they had met at a job training camp.
