A man faces a first-degree arson charge over a fire at a Tacoma rental property owned by former NFL player and University of Washington standout Desmond Trufant.
A neighbor saw flames outside the North 10th Street house on Tuesday, October 13. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but it left damage in the attic and living room as well as on the covered patio. No one was inside the home, which is rented for occasions including weddings and reunions.
According to court documents, surveillance footage showed a man enter the patio, gather outdoor furniture and ignite it with a lighter. Detectives identified 50-year-old Sean Ross Demery after showing neighbors images from the footage. Police arrested him Wednesday near South 12th Street and South Mildred Street.
Officers said they found an orange lighter in Demery’s pocket matching an item seen in the video. Demery allegedly told police he started the fire over grievances involving Trufant and his brother.
