Two men have been charged in connection with a college student’s fatal fentanyl poisoning and the near-fatal poisoning of another student at a Manhattan residence hall. Federal prosecutors also allege that one of the men raped the student who died while she was unconscious.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York identified the defendants as Moises Freire, 19, of the Bronx, and Brian Peralta Cabrera, 18, of Queens. Prosecutors say Peralta Cabrera supplied fentanyl to Freire knowing he intended to give it to the two women.
On March 18, Freire allegedly brought the drugs to the women’s dorm rooms and claimed they were cocaine without fentanyl. Both women lost consciousness after taking them, prosecutors say. Freire is accused of raping one woman while she was unconscious; prosecutors say he waited about 45 minutes before approaching campus security and falsely attributed the women’s condition to alcohol. The college has not been identified.
