A cyber attack on refrigeration controls has left hundreds of French supermarkets with spoiled fresh and frozen food, with losses estimated in the millions of euros.
Attackers took control of software used to manage cooling units remotely. Some units reached 50C overnight. Intermarché said its fridges stayed at that temperature for six hours and that it discarded all affected food.
The scale remains unclear, though figures from retailers suggest about 500 stores were affected. More than 100 Coopérative U stores were targeted, while at least 300 Intermarché and Netto stores were affected. Carrefour and Monoprix also reported disruption.
Danfoss, which provides the software, said the affected units were older models that could not receive a security update against a risk it had identified. Mousquetaires Group, owner of Intermarché and Netto, said some fresh and frozen food display units were still out of service on Monday afternoon.
