Speed-limit cameras covering 440 miles of major roads in England have been out of action since December 2025, ministers have acknowledged. The problem affects 154 cameras, including some on smart motorways.

Those roads account for about a tenth of the Strategic Road Network, which comprises motorways and major A-roads. The affected cameras make up more than a third of the 400 across the motorway network. Officials say the fault reaches smart motorways, where variable speed limits are used to prevent deaths and injuries.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander launched an independent review in January after the faults emerged the previous month. It was due to report within 18 weeks, but had not been published by 19 October 2026.
