Five water companies have introduced hosepipe restrictions as prolonged dry weather puts pressure on supplies across parts of Britain.
Aerial photographs show yellowing grass around Stonehenge, King’s College Cambridge and golf clubs. In London, Wimbledon Common, Greenwich Park and Tooting Common have turned brown after weeks of heat and little rain.
The companies imposing restrictions are Southern Water, Affinity Water, South East Water, Cambridge Water and Anglian Water. In affected areas, people cannot use hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, windows or outdoor areas, or fill swimming and paddling pools. Officials are particularly concerned about East Anglia, Devon, Cornwall, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight following a dry spring and summer.
London has had no rain since 27 June, and the Met Office forecast lists none through Sunday. The dry conditions have also brought an extreme wildfire risk and continued rail disruption.
